- Science practical work is an important part of Biology Teacher Education Program (BTEP) curriculumin order to (1) confirm and illustrate the theory, and (2) develop students’ knowledge and skills toteach successfully in junior and senior high school science laboratory. This paper describes how OpenUniversity(OU) conducts the practical work and how students’ perception toward the implementationof practical work. The paper was based upon the study of the practical work implementation in thefirst semester of 2011, at an OU-Regional Office (RO). The data were collected by interviewingpractical work instructors, distributing a questionnaire to 15 students, and observing practical workactivities. The results of the study revealed that (1) OU/RO collaborated with a face to face institutionof higher education to facilitate BTEP students doing the practical work activities, (2) the studentsactively participated in accomplishing the required tasks of practical works and wrote the report, (3)practical work assessment was based upon students’ performance and practical work report, and (4)students considered that practical work would develop their understanding of scientific concepts, science skills, curiosity, and ability to work carefully and systematically. The conclusions of the studywere (1) the implementation of practical work could be used to confirm and illustrate theory andpresentation experience for future teaching, and (2) the students who well and actively performed thepractical work, were capable of writing the report, and revealed positive perception toward thepractical work.
