- This study aims to analyze farmers' decision making in selecting understorey types in the sengon-based mixed garden. The research was conducted in Majenang District, Cilacap Regency, Central Java. Data were analyzed descriptively using Gladwin's real-life choice theory approach. The results of the study are as follows. First, thirteen main root crops make up the sengon-based mixed garden, namely: coffee, cocoa, cloves, coconut, petai, nutmeg, pepper, rubber, dukuh, pisitan, rambutan, soursop, and guava, as well as seven types of secondary root crops, namely: cardamom, cayenne pepper, banana, ginger, turmeric, cassava, and galangal. Second, the lower crops chosen by farmers based on five aspects of decision making were nutmeg and pepper for the main understorey, and cardamom and ginger for secondary understorey. Therefore, the lower plants that need to get priority to be cultivated in the development of mixed gardens in Majenang District, Cilacap Regency are nutmeg, pepper, cardamom and or ginger. The central and local governments need to facilitate the development of these mixed gardens.
- ABSTRACTThis study aims to determine the process and results of farmers' decision making in selecting understorey species in the sengon based mixed garden. This research was conducted in Majenang Subdistrict, Cilacap Regency, Central Java Province from October 2016 to March 2017. The data were analyzed descriptively using Gladwin's real-life choice theory approach. The results showed that the farmers had carried out the process of selecting understorey species in mixed gardens through three stages, namely identification of plant species, species elimination and decision instinct. Based on this research, it can be concluded that (1) the process of determining the main understoyer species is carried out by eliminating alternative types of plants based on five aspects, namely production orientation, land biophysical conditions, knowledge, time / labor and capital allocation. After that the decision-making process is continued by comparing the two types of plants selected based on four main considerations, namely total income, continuity of production, level of ease of maintenance, and production speed, (2) understorey species produced from the farmer decision-making process consisting of nutmeg or pepper for main understorey and cardamom or ginger for secondary understoyer. Therefore, it is recommended that the central and local governments prioritize plant species resulting from the decision-making process by farmers in determining the types of plants in agroforestry development in the form of mixed gardens Key words: decision making, species selection, mixed garden ABSTRAKPenelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses dan hasil pengambilan keputusan petani dalam pemilihan jenis tanaman bawah pada kebun campuran berbasis sengon. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Kecamatan Majenang, Kabupaten Cilacap, Jawa Tengah pada bulan Oktober 2016 sampai dengan Maret 2017. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan pendekatan teori real-life choice Gladwin. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa petani telah melakukan proses pemilihan jenis tanaman bawah pada kebun campuran melalui tiga tahapan yaitu identifikasi jenis tanaman, eliminasi jenis dan instisari keputusan. Berdasarkan penelitian ini maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa (1) proses penentuan jenis tanaman bawah utama dilakukan dengan mengeliminasi alternatif jenis tanaman berdasarkan lima aspek yaitu orientasi produksi, kondisi biofisik lahan, pengetahuan, waktu/tenaga kerja dan alokasi modal. Setelah itu proses pengambilan keputusan dilanjutkan dengan membandingkan dua jenis tanaman terpilih berdasarkan empat pertimbangan utama yaitu pendapatan total, kontinuitas produksi, kemudahan dalam pemeliharaan, dan kecepatan produksi, (2) jenis tanaman bawah yang dihasilkan dari proses pengambilan keputusan petani terdiri dari pala atau lada untuk tanaman bawah utama dan kapulaga atau jahe untuk tanaman bawah sekunder. Oleh karena itu, disarankan kepada pemerintah pusat dan daerah untuk lebih mengutamakan jenis tanaman bawah yang dihasilkan dari proses pengambilan keputusan oleh petani dalam penetapan jenis tanaman dalam pengembangan agroforestry dalam bentuk kebun campuran,
