- ABSTRACT ISNAINI EDDY SAPUTRO. 2019. Lecturers‘ Direct Question in EFL Classroom. (Supervised by Murni Mahmud and Kisman Salija). This research focused on the lecturers‘ direct question in EFL Classroom. The aims of this research are to find out the types of lecturers‘ direct questions, the impacts of lecturers‘ direct question on students‘ psychological traits and the reasons of the lecturers in using direct questions in EFL classroom. Since students learnt English as foreign language in the classroom, the lecturers attempted to apply teaching by questioning in term of direct questions to involve the students to acquire new words in learning the language. The strategy made the students feel easy to communicate in the classroom and it influenced in teaching and learning process. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design in analyzing the lecturers‘ direct questions in EFL classroom, the impacts on students‘ psychological traits, and there reasons of lecturers in using direct questions in the classroom. The subjects of this research were two English lecturers, undergraduate students and graduate students of English Department at State University of Makassar. The researcher observed and interviewed two English lecturers and six students to reveal the phenomena under investigation. The researcher conducted observation by audio recording and it was helped by using video recording with observation checklist, and interview by using audio recording. The findings of the research showed that the types of direct questions used by the lecturers were open-ended question, referential question and non-referential question to help the students to think and to get the students‘ attention in learning process. Besides that, lecturers‘ direct questions gave the impact on the students‘ psychological aspect in which the students felt free to give their opinion related to the instruction and students‘ anxiety decreased in the classroom so that they have high motivation to interact with the lecturer, the students get a challenge to answer and the lecturers help the students to think. Hence, the language learning becomes effective as the aim in teaching language. Keywords: Lecturers‘ Questions, Direct Questions, Question Strategy, English Language Teaching
