  • The purpose of this study was to describe thecharacteristics and ?ndings of an early literacy interventionprogram implemented to facilitate the development ofcritical emergent literacy skills among children identi?edas low-income and at-risk in the context of collaborative,pre-kindergarten/Head Start classrooms. Using data from asample of pre-Kindergartners (n = 154), the interventionreveals the effectiveness of early literacy intervention inthe areas of vocabulary, phonological awareness, and printknowledge. The study suggests the possibility of preventingliteracy delays and referrals for specialized, specialeducation services for young children through early interventionat the preschool level.
