  • Modification of ultrafiltration membranes of polysulfone in polysulfone/N,Ndimethylacetamide/ water ternary system by phase inversion technique and its studies to protein fouling has been done. Polymeric membranes modified by addition of additive and variation of evaporation time. The membranes were prepared from dope solutions containing polysulfone (PSf) 35 kD as polymer, N,Ndimethylacetamide (DMAc) as solvent, and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as additive. There were two compositions of dope solutions; PSf 18 % + DMAc 82% + non PEG (PSf A) and PSf 18 % + DMAc 72% + PEG 10% (PSf B). Dope solutions were cast in different evaporation times (0, 0.5, and 1 minute) before immersion into the pure water coagulation bath. Then membranes were characterized their physical properties (densities, swelling degree, and mechanical force), membrane performance, and protein fouling. The result that revealed the increase of evaporation time and PEG addition increased densities, swelling degree, and mechanical force of polysulfone membranes. Meanwhile membrane performance decreases significantly with the increase of evaporation time, but membrane performance increase with addition of PEG. Fouling charaterization by BSA caused irreversible protein adsorption and aggregation fouling.
