The subject involves twenty students of Grade XI majoring in AA (Advance Automotive). This study used a descriptive-qualitative design. To collect the relevant data, some instruments were used, among others observation checklist, the headmaster and English teacher’s interview guides and the students’ questionnaire. The findings of this study were as follows. First, the micro skill of the extracurricular speaking class is the extracurricular class acts as the continuation of the regular class. Second, the activities conducted in the speaking class were discussions, story telling, vocabulary games, and watching movies. Third, the teaching techniques applied by the teacher were the controlled techniques, the semi controlled techniques, and the free techniques. Fourth, the materials used in the speaking class were newspaper or articles, narrative texts, and movies. Fifth, the media used in the classroom were newspaper, whiteboard, computer and Liquid Crystal Displayer (LCD), and movies. Sixth, there was a special room for the speaking activity. Seventh, the teacher used the concept of on-going assessment. Eight, the students’ problems in the speaking class were concerned with linguistic problems and psychological and affective factors. Lastly, the students’ strategies in overcoming the speaking problems were paraphrasing, creating new words, adjusting the message, using native language, using non-linguistic resources, and searching for other help. Based on the result of the study, some recommendations are addressed to the English teacher, the management of SMK Negeri 1 Singosari and other researchers. For the English teacher, he has to create more interesting activities so that the students have willingness to speak. Then, he has to use a fixed syllabus for speaking class. Moreover, he has to use a scoring rubric to asses the students’ oral abilities. Furthermore, he has to pay attention to the students’ problems especially while speaking. For the management of SMK Negeri 1 Singosari, he has to provide a special room for the extracurricular speaking instead of a multimedia room only. For other researchers, it is suggested for them to conduct research with one specific variable as an in-depth study.
