  • The classification in the curriculum differenciate the students of senior high school into three streamings: IPA (Hard Science), IPS (Social Science), and Bahasa (Languange) Programs. The Hard Science and Social Science Programs have the same time allocation for English subject so they study Englsih for the same periods of time, that is 4 sessions a week. However, the public opinion claims that the students of the Hard Science Program are higher qualified than those of the Social Program. This situation raises a question whether the English achievement of the students of both programs is different or not. Thus, this study is intended to investigate whether there is a significant difference in the English achievement of the students of the Hard Science and Social Science Programs. In addition, it is also to find the factors that may contribute to the different achievement of the students of both programs. The population of this study is all the students of SMA Negeri 2 Jombang majoring in the Hard Science and Social Science Programs. The samples in this study are Grade XI IPA-6 which respresents the Hard Science Program and Grade XI IPS-2 as the representative of the Social Science Program. They are chosen purposively that is both classes are taught by the same English teacher. Furthermore, the data are obtained by using document of scores, observation sheets and questionnaires (for the students and for the teacher). Then, the data from the document of scores of the students are analyzed using t-test to determine whether the difference of the English achievement of the students of both programs is significant or not. While, the data from the observation sheets and questionnaires are analyzed using the table of frequency distribution and percentage, and also presented in a descriptive form. The result shows that the mean score of the students of the Hard Science Program is 74.39 and that of the Social Science Program is 74. The calculation using the t-test shows that the obtained t-value is 0.175. It is much smaller than the appropriate t-value in the t-table of 1.671 which is needed in a directional test for the level of significant of 0.05. It means that the null hypothesis in this study is accepted and the research hypothesis is rejected. So, there is no significant difference in the English achievement between the students of the Hard Science and the Social Science Programs. Furthermore, there are some factors that might influence the same English achievement of the students of both programs, namely context variable, presage variable and process variable. Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the students of the Hard Science and the Social Science Programs have the same iv much.
