- This study is intended to find out students’ grammatical problems in writing. It was conducted at . In line with the purpose of the study, the design of this study was a case study. The subjects were the 38 first year students in the 7.8 class of . The instruments used to collect the data are the students’ writing tasks on the themes of Hobbies and Shopping. The errors found in the students’ tasks are then classified based on the surface strategy taxonomy on errors of omission, additions, misformation and misordering. The study reveals the following findings: the students’ grammatical problems on writing paragraphs are numerous. The highest structure problems in omission are on the omission of followed by the omission of the form. The highest structure problems in addition are the addition of followed by the addition of apostrophe s. The highest structure problems of misformation are the misformation of verbs followed by the misformation of pronoun. The highest structure errors in misordering are the misordering of the adverb followed by the misordering of noun phrase.
