- Humans have a deep need to communicate with others. Therefore, they need language as a means of communication. Indonesian people are fortunate to have a national language called Indonesian. This language has been successfully uniting the plurality of Indonesian culture. In international context, English is widely recognised as the mostly used language across the countries. The supremacy of English speaking countries in industry and technology has triggered the spread of English. As a result, it is considered important to teach English in most countries, including Indonesia. Textbooks hold an important role in the teaching and learning activities. Related to that fact, Indonesian government has a big concern to provide students and teachers in Indonesia with national standardized books. The government has released a new program called BSE (Buku Elektronik Sekolah). In establishing this program, the government invited authors, teachers, or lecturers to develop textbook, which is then selected by BSNP (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan). However, the result of the analysis has never been published. Therefore, the teachers who want to use e-book do not know the strength and weaknesses of the e-book. Due to that fact the researcher would like to analyze one of the e-books. It was expected that the result of this study could be beneficial for the teachers who will use this e-book, for the authors of this e-book and future researchers. The study focused on analyzing the activities in English e-book for senior high school grade X, Developing English Competencies written by Achmad Doddy et al. This study attempted to reveal to what extent activities in the textbook are communicative. It was carried out by documenting the activities in each chapter and comparing them with communicativeness criteria such as authenticity, stimulating interaction, emphasising on fluency and beyond the classroom. The results of the study showed that 24.1% activities in the whole textbook are considered communicative. It can be concluded that most activities in the textbook are considered least communicative. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends the teachers who will use this book to add more activities which have higher degree of communicativeness such as jigsaw, information transfer, creating email account, write an invitation cards, or adapt the activities in the textbook and modify them for communicative learning. For the textbook authors, it is suggested that they have to enrich the textbook with communicative activity in case they revise the textbook. For future researcher, it is suggested that they analyse other aspects of the textbook, or use other instruments to analyze it.
