- This study analyzed the creation and control over docile bodies in order to maintain the power in Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is the first of trilogy by Suzanne Collins conveys a story about of dystopian nation. It tells about the social injustice the government formulate by the creating of docile bodies throughout the nation of Panem using disciplinary technology. Docile body is one “that may be subjected, used, transformed, and improved” (Foucault, 1977: 136). The novel depicts how the government attempts to create and control docile bodies in order to maintain their power.

The novel depicts how the government attempts to create and control docile bodies in order to maintain their power. The result of analysis reveals the strategies of disciplinary power that the government of Panem use to implementing discipline and controlling the body. The nation of Panem consist of twelve districts that rings the capital city, the Capitol. The arrangement of the state indicates the Panopticon building that intended to replace the dungeon for prisoner. This novel depicts different way of the government to implementing disciplinary technology by distinguish them into the Capitol resident and the districts resident. It implies that space is a crucial strategies for the government to divide the bodies into several group of people and place it in a close place, leaving them having no interaction to each other. While separating the space in the districts, the production of docile bodies in the Capitol is different that the districts. The government creates a clear boundaries between normal and natural behavior and appearance. What considered ‘normal’ is whatever favors the social standard and norm of the Capitol, even though it is not natural, including female bodies. The female bodies produce through diet and plastic surgery, body gesture and movement, and dress and make-up. Thosemake the public shift their attention to fashion, entertainment, and social status. After the production of docile bodies across the nation, the government maintain their power by controlling docile bodies. The government invents a security force to control the bodies in the nation. Moreover, the invention of camera also helps the government to monitor the bodies. In twelve Districts of Panem, investing the fear toward the government and placing them in a work labor condition to meet the demands of the government, effectively turn them into a prisoner in their own body. In the other hand, the government also creates a model for the Capitol public to follow so that the bodies are busied to keep an eye on the model and ignore about the imbalance of power. Hence, those systems in produce and control the bodies depict a disciplinary technology that the government used to perceive docility and sustain their authority over them. Pada negara itu terjadi ketidakadilan sosial yang disebabkan oleh penerapan docile bodies yang diciptakan oleh pemerintah di seluruh negara bagian Panem dengan menggunakan teknologi disiplin. Docile bodies ialah sistem pembinaan dan pembangunan masyarakat yang diduga dapa tmenjadikan individu patuh. Novel ini mengilustrasikan tentang cara pemerintah untuk membuat dan mengontrol docile-bodies untuk mempertahankan kekuasaan mereka. Hasil dari analisis mengungkapkan strategi dari kekuasaan disiplin yang digunakan oleh pemerintah Panem sebagai cara untuk menerapkan disiplin dan mengendalikan tubuh. Panem terdiri dari dua belas negara bagian yang mengelilingi ibukota, Capitol. Susunan negara merajuk pada model bangunan Panopticon yang diterapkan dalam menggantikan model bangunan penjara. Pemerintah menerapkan teknologi disiplin dengan membedakan penduduk Capitol dan penduduk negara bagian. Hal ini menyiratkan bahwa organisasi spasial dalam pemerintahan merupakan strategi yang sangat baik bagi pemerintah dalam mengelompokkan individu dalam beberapa kelompok dan menempatkan mereka di tempat yang tertutup, sehingga mereka tidak dapat interaksi antara satu dan yang lain. Selain itu, pemerintah juga menggunakan metode dalam pembentukan docile bodies di Capitol yang membedakan dengan di negara bagian. Pemerintah menentukan batasan yang jelas antara perilaku dan penampilan normal dan natural. Perilaku dan penampilan yang normal harus sesuai dengan norma dan standart sosial dalam lingkup masyarakat Capitol, termasuk tubuh wanita. Tubuh wanita dibentuk melalui diet and operasi plastik, gesture dan gerak-gerik tubuh, dan cara berpakaian. Hal ini membuat fokus masyarakat bergeser kepada mode, hiburan, dan status sosial. Setelah pemerintah berhasil membentuk docile bodies di seluruh negara, selanjutnya mempertahankan kekuasaannya dengan kontrol ketat, yaitu membentuk petugas keamanan masyarakat dan menggunakan kamera untuk mengontrol individu. Semua warga negara Panem menjadi takut terhadap pemerintah sehingga dapat membuat individu menjadi semacam tahanan dalam diri mereka sendiri. Pada sisi yang lain, pemerintah menampilkan model bagi warga masyarakat Capitol untuk menjadi panutan, sehingga individu sibuk untuk mengikuti panutan mereka dan mengabaikan ketimpangan kekuasaan yang ada. Kesimpulannya, sistem yang bekerja dalam menciptakan dan mengontrol masyarakat menggambarkan teknologi disiplin yang digunakan pemerintah dapat menghasilkan kepatuhan sekaligus dapat menjaga kekuasaannya.
