  • ABSTRACT Wijaya, Octavia Maharani. 2015. Women’s “Ritual” of Returning Compliment in Instagram. Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisor 1: Maria Hidayati, S.S., M.Pd. Advisor 2: AuliaApriana, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Compliment, Compliment Response, Women’s Compliment Response, Instagram This research is aimed at finding the tendency of women’s responses toward compliments given in social media, Instagram. Compliment and compliment responses are two things that cannot be separated. As cited from Holmes (1995), although women and men are likely to accept compliments with an agreeing comment, women tend to disagree more often than men in responding compliments. This means that women have more various responses toward compliments. Holmes further proposed three major types of compliment responses found across gender; they are Accepting, Rejecting, and Deflecting. Each major types are further divided into several subcategories. In order to get a better understanding about the compliment responses, the researcher also analyzed the maxims used and flouted in those responses. In analyzing the maxims, the researcher used the theories of maxims proposed by Leech (1993). Leech stated that there are six maxims that are related to politeness and face; Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Agreement Maxim, Modesty Maxim and Sympathy Maxim. By using descriptive design and qualitative approach, the researcher used those two theories in analyzing the data. The data of the research were collected from social media Instagram, with 25 subjects chosen. The data is taken in two phases with time difference to see the tendency of women responses toward compliment. The researcher found that the most frequent type of response is Return Compliment, with consistent frequency throughout both phases (32%). In accordance to the responses, the most frequent maxims that are used are Approbation Maxim and the combination of Approbation and Modesty Maxim. Those maxims were found mostly in Return Compliment and combinations of response type that also used Return Compliment. It is also found that the subjects used Return Compliment based on their proximity to the complimenters. When the compliment came from someone with close relationship (best friends, close friends), complimentees tended to baldly accept it. However, when the compliment came from acquaintances, complimentees tended to use Return Compliment. This findings are supported by Herbert’s statement (1990): intimacy can change the parameters set by speech acts and reduce the need to tend carefully to the complimenter’s face. This result showed that women in Instagram tended to use Return Compliment as the type of responses toward compliments. It also indicates that modesty manner is still highly perceived among today’s women, especially in Instagram. Upon reading the result of the research, the readers should learn on how to respond compliment appropriately considering the politeness strategy and positive face of both complimenter and complimentee. The researcher also expected students from Linguistics to use this study as a reference of applying theory of Pragmatics in the linguistics phenomena in the daily life. Lastly, future researchers of Compliment and Compliment Response are expected to get inspired and broaden the focus into other types of compliments and consider the cultures, also norms of society as the probable reason behind certain types of compliment responses.
