Advisor : Dr. Furaidah, M.A. Key words: speaking skill, strategies of teaching This study aimed to describe the strategies of teaching speaking skill applied by the English teachers of SMP International Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang. It was focused on the steps that the teachers took in teaching speaking, the activities that the teachers did in teaching speaking, and the obstacles that teachers experienced in teaching speaking. This study used descriptive research design. It was conducted in SMP International Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang which located at Jl. Simpang Bogor 19, Malang. There were three English teachers in this school and two of them were selected as the subject of this study. To collect the data, this study used two instruments: interview guide and observation sheet. The data were collected in March, 2014. It was found that to develop students’ speaking skill, the English teachers of SMP International Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang divided the English class into two: regular class and English intensive class. Regular class The regular class was conducted in the morning in which the teachers focused on teaching four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). The teacher taught using a workbook and speaking was taught integratedly with other skills. The intensive class was an additional class for English subject which was conducted in the afternoon. Here, the teachers focused on teaching speaking skill. The teachers used various teaching strategies in this class. There were five strategies implemented by the teachers in the English intensive class: report making, role-play, description, presentation, and talking to invite native speakers. Using interesting strategies in teaching speaking avoid the students feeling bored in the teaching and learning process. The students could enjoy the teaching and learning process. There were some obstacles that teachers found in the regular class when teaching speaking skill because the strategies that teachers used in teaching maked the students bored. In the English intensive class, there were no obstacles found by the teachers because they applied interesting strategies. The students could enjoy the learning process because the situation created by the teachers was enjoyable to them. Based on the result of the study, it was suggested that the teachers should have an interesting way in teaching speaking skill in both classes.
