- ABSTRACT Hartik, Halla Al. 2014. Using Picture Series to Improve the Ability of the Eighth Graders in Writing Narrative Texts in SMP Negeri 21 Malang. Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisor: Prof. Ali Saukah M.A., Ph.D. Key Words: picture series, writing ability, narrative texts, Junior High School Writing ability can be best defined as the ability to write and express ideas in well organized texts. Writing is widely believed to be the most complex and difficult among all language skills. Junior High School students have to have competence in writing several texts types, one of which is narrative text. In order to help learners to solve problems in generating idea for writing narrative texts, teachers can use some instructional media and/or techniques, for instance picture series as this present study concerns on. Based on the preliminary study, it was found that in SMP Negeri 21 Malang, the ability of VIII 8 students in writing narrative texts has not been satisfactory yet since there were only 10 out of 36 students passing Minimum Learning Mastery or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM). It was also revealed that the problems faced by the students not only lied upon the linguistic feature, but also difficulty in generating idea and organizing those ideas to be conveyed in a text. This means that the difficulty of students in writing narrative texts was particularly in the stage of prewriting when the students started to write. In addition, the media provided by the school had not been optimized in the teaching and learning activity. Realizing those problems, the researcher used picture series which were selected to be implemented in the teaching and learning process. The design of the study was Classroom Action Research conducted in one cycle consisting of four stages. They are planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 36 students of VIII 8 in SMP Negeri 21 Malang. In this study, two collaborators were involved to assist the researcher. In addition, there were four research instruments utilized in order to collect the data, consisting of observation checklists, field notes, scoring rubric, and questionnaires. After the implementation of action which was conducted for four meetings, the study showed successful result both in terms of students’ participation and students’ ability in writing narrative texts. The criteria of success in the present study required at least 50% of students (18 out of 36 students) participated in the teaching and learning process and 75% of students (27 out of 36 students) passed the Minimum Learning Mastery (KKM) required by the school. According to the findings, the percentage of students actively participated during teaching and learning process was 89.9% (33 out of 36 students). Meanwhile, after the implementation of action, there were also 33 students whose scores passed the KKM . Those findings showed that picture series can be utilized to facilitate students in improving their ability in writing narrative texts. In accordance with the findings of this study, there were some suggestions provided for English teachers, and future researchers. It was suggested for English teachers to use picture series as the instructional media to facilitate students in learning writing or the other skills. Before using picture series, the teachers were recommended to carefully select the picture series and adjust them to the students as well as considering the teaching techniques to implement the picture series. For other researchers especially for those who want to conduct similar research, hopefully they can conduct the research in different subjects of study, for instance higher level of education. Other researchers are also recommended conducting the further study in different areas of language skills, such as listening, speaking, and reading.
