Advisor: Drs. Kukuh P. Subagyo, M.A. Keywords: western idealization, alienation, mimicry, resistance A Pale View of Hills is an interesting novel written by Kazuo Ishiguro. Western idealization is represented sufficiently in the work. The main character, Etsuko, narrates the story of both her earlier life in Japan and her present life in England. She recollects her past concerning her relationship with Sachiko and Mariko as well as Ogata-san and Jiro. This study aims to reach an understanding and detailed explanation about Etsuko’s recollections. The truth beneath the very suspicious acts of hers is the focus of this study. Implementing postcolonialism in generating meanings of the novel, this thesis attempts to show the text’s resistance against Western domination in one side. Moreover, the project digs out the second side of the text, which is the novel’s surrender to the power of Western idealization. Postcolonial approach is used in order to explore the issue further. The branches of postcolonial concept such as alienation and mimicry are also elaborated in this study to read Etsuko’s behavior. In addition, theory of resistance is also significant to make the research able to achieve its objectives. From the analysis, it is revealed that the novel implicitly shows the destructive effect of dominancy, specifically Western supremacy. Moreover, Etsuko’s feeling of regret justifies how tragic possibly life can do towards those minorized and displaced people. Surprisingly, the story of which Etsuko suffers from the alienation and homeward bound convey the submission and challenge, as well, toward Western hegemony. The hope and expectation of the migrant bride, as shown by the text, is crushed and burnt into ashes when she already moves abroad. It proves the presence of dualism within the novel. From the representations, it is justifiable to say that the novel struggles in challenging the so-called Western idealization; while at the same time surrenders to it. Karakter utamanya, Etsuko, menceritakan kisah hidupnya ketika ia masih tinggal di Jepang serta kehidupannya yang sekarang di Inggris. Dia mengingat kembali masa lalu tentang hubungannya dengan Sachiko dan Mariko serta Ogata-san dan Jiro. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencapai pemahaman dan penjelasan rinci tentang ingatan-ingatan Etsuko itu. Kenyataan dari tindakan-tindakannya akan menjadi fokus utama penelitian ini. Dengan menerapkan teori postolonialism untuk memaknai novel tersebut, riset ini di satu sisi berusaha untuk menunjukkan perlawanan oleh teks terhadap dominasi Barat. Selanjutnya, proyek ini memaparkan sisi lain dari novel tersebut, yaitu bagaimana teks menyerah pada kekuatan Barat. Pendekatan postcolonial digunakan untuk mengeksplorasi masalah ini lebih lanjut. Cabang-cabang dari konsep postcolonial, seperti alienasi dan mimikri, juga akan diuraikan dalam penelitian ini untuk membantu menginterpretasikan perilaku-perilaku Etsuko. Selain itu, teori resistensi juga cukup penting memahami novel ini. Dari analisis yang telah dilaksanakan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa novel ini secara implisit menunjukkan efek buruk dominansi, khususnya supremasi Barat. Selain itu, perasaan Etsuko yang menyesal di akhir cerita dapat menggambarkan tragisnya nasib kaum minoritas dan imigran. Yang cukup mengejutkan, alienasi dan keterikatan pada negara asal yang dialami oleh Etsuko menunjukkan adanya pemberontakan dan kepasrahan pada hegemoni Barat pada saat yang sama. Harapan dan impian wanita yang bermigrasi karena pernikahan, seperti yang ditunjukkan oleh teks, hancur berantakan sesampainya di tempat tujuan. Hal ini menggarisbawahi dualisme yang ada di novel tersebut. Dari representasi yang telah dijabarkan, dapat dikatakan bahwa novel ini mengandung resistensi sekaligus penyerahan diri terhadap pengagungan bangsa Barat. Sikap teks yang mendua inilah yang harus dimengerti supaya diperoleh interpretasi yang lengkap terhadap A Pale View of Hills, karangan Kazuo Ishiguro.
