  • ABSTRACT Rakhmawati, Isna. 2013. Developing Supplementary Listening Materials for the Seventh Graders. Thesis, Department of English, Faculty of Letter, State University of Malang. Advisor: Prof. Drs. BambangYudiCahyono, M.Pd. M.A. Ph.D. Keywords: Supplementary listening materials, short functional texts, audio recording, learners of the seventh graders The purpose of this study was to develop supplementary listening materials for students of junior high school in the seventh grade to be used for self-study materials. The materials were developed on the basis of the analysis of 2006 Standard of Content and 2013 English Curriculum syllabus, preliminary study and students’ needs analysis from the English teachers’ point of view. Based on the result of the analysis, there were several reasons why the materials were developed: (1) the adequacy of listening materials particularly on oral short functional texts in the students’ textbook was not yet fulfilling the Standard of Content of 2.2 and (2) the students’ needs of appealing and motivating listening materials was not yet provided. This study adapted the research and development (R&D) design by Smaldino, Lowther and Russell (2005), which covers the following stages: Analyze learners, State objectives, Select methods, Utilize media and materials, Require learners’ participation & Evaluate and revise (ASSURE). The procedures of the materials development include: (1) Analyze the learners’ needs, (2) Develop the listening materials, (3) Obtain the expert validation, (4) Revise the materials, (5) Utilize the materials, (6) Evaluate and revise the materials and (7) Finalize the product. The subject of the product try-out was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gempol. The data were gathered using the interview guide, expert validation checklist and students’ questionnaires. The final product of this study was presented in the form of paper-based materials and the audio recording was attached inside CD/DVD. The listening materials were developed in three packages. Package A focused on oral short functional text type, namely: shopping lists (Shopping at the Grocery Store). Package B focused on greeting cards (Celebrating the New Year). Package C covered announcements (Traveling to some Islands in Indonesia). The answer key and tape script were inserted to each of the packages to allow the learners to do self-reflection. The result of the expert validation showed that the materials still needed further revision because the content of the materials did not conform to the Standard of Content of 2006. However, the materials reflected the 2013 English Curriculum because the content of materials combined transactional and functional conversations. According to the students when they gave feedback after the product try-out the materials, all of them (100%) believed that the materials were interesting in terms of the lay-out and topics and the materials were able to motivate the students to learn listening. ABSTRAK Rakhmawati, Isna. 2013. Developing Supplementary Listening Materials for the Seventh Graders.Skripsi, Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Negeri Malang. Pembimbing: Prof. Drs. Bambang Yudi Cahyono, M.Pd. M.A. Ph.D. Paket A fokus pada materi oral pada teks fungsional pendek dalam bentuk shopping lists (Shopping at the Grocery Stores). Paket B fokus pada materi greeting cards (Celebrating the New Year).Paket C mencakup materi announcements (Traveling to some Islands in Indonesia).
