- Keywords: content analysis, English textbook series, criteria of good EFL textbooks This study is conducted in order to analyze the English textbook series Look Ahead; An English Course for Senior High School Students Grade X, XI, and XII, published by Erlangga. Specifically, the study is aimed to analyze the suitability of the materials with the textbook evaluation criteria from BSNP, language component, and language skills based on the criteria adapted from BSNP and the theories produced by some experts such as Cunningsworth (1995), Brown (2007), and Harmer (2007). The method used in this study is descriptive evaluative which focuses on content analysis design. The researcher evaluated the textbook for each grade to obtain the information about the evaluation of the textbook series. The data collection and data analysis were conducted using the checklist as the main instruments. Then, the data were interpreted using the rationale score. The checklist consists of the criteria which were modified from BSNP and some experts. The textbook series were qualified as good with the score 71.45. It means that the textbook series can be used as standard source for senior high school students. The score obtained is the average of the textbook scores for each grade such as Look Ahead; An English Course for Senior High School Grade X which obtained the score 73.79 and it can be categorized as good. Then, the textbook for grade XI obtained the score 77.6 which can be classified as good. Meanwhile, the textbook Look Ahead; An English Course for Senior High School Grade XII is regarded as good with the score of 67.33. These score were obtained from the average score of the score in the suitability of the materials with criteria from BSNP, language components, and language skills. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the authors improve the quality of the textbook by considering some aspects in terms of suitability of the materials with the standard of content and the activities and materials in the language feature. Moreover, the teacher should be creative in using the strengths of the textbook series and adopt other materials to cover the weaknesses when they use the textbook series in the classroom. For other researchers who may conduct studies in similar topic, it is suggested that they use different and more detailed criteria in analyzing the textbook. Imananda, Alfima Azmi. 2012.
