- ABSTRACT Riswati, Suaibah Indah. 2012. Power and Ideology Reflected in the Use of Transitivity, Transformation and Modality in the Jakarta Post News Report on President SBY’s Power Abuse. Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisor: EvynurulLaily Zen, S.S.,M.A. Keywords: The Jakarta Post News Report, Transitivity, Transformation, Modality, Power, Ideology The issue of power abuse alleged to president SBY has arrived in more complicated situation, since the allegations were provided by WikiLeaks, a multijurisdictional public service designed to protect whistleblowers, journalists and activists with sensitive materials to communicate to the public. WikiLeaks’ allegation then re-reported by two Australian newspapers, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. Short after the publication, almost all news media in Indonesia published numerous news reports containing reactive feedback against the issue. The researcher was intrigued in this point, since all news media wrote the news reports in different way. This difference attracted the researcher to cover the texts by examining Transitivity, Transformation and Modality in the news reports. After that, the researcher proceeded to reveal power and ideology spread behind the texts. This research used qualitative research, since it was intended to analyze how the media in this case the Jakarta Post construct the news by examining Transitivity, Transformation and Modality in the news report. The data of this study were obtained from pages in official websites of the Jakarta Post, edition March 11-12 2011. The data were several news reports that heedfully studied and congregated into five primary data. The finding showed that the ideology of the newsmakers was the same as that of everyone whose quotations were attached for many times in the news reports. The newsmakers provided many supporting ideas through several quotations by which they attempted to shape the newsreaders’ idea that the issue was untrustworthy. Moreover the use of Transitivity figures was aimed at avoding quick assertion and interpretation of the newsreaders. Direct and indirect quotation in the news reports implicated the attemptto create the reality that presented to the newsreaders. This scheme was made to create a reality that WikiLeaks was not dependable. This purpose was also reflected in the use of Transformation, in which the newsmakers used nominalization and passive transformation. The newsmakers lessened the sense of process and action in order to create a certain reality on the issue. The last is the use of Modality in which facts were depicted to insist. By using the modality, the newsmakers attempted to control the newsreaders’ idea toward the issue, since modals had a wide variety of interpretations which depended not only upon the particular modal used, but also upon where the modal occured in a sentence, the meaning of the sentence independent of the modal, the conversational context, and a variety of other factors (Chen-xi&Feng-Jun, 2009). The newsmakers were not courageous to provide facts occurred in SBY’s authority periods, which actually had possibility to be linked back to the leaked cables. Thus, it is important for the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) analyst to study deeper about textual analysis, in particular, CDA, to find the implication of power and ideology practices. The newsreadersmust also know that a text should not be considered as merely a text. Text tends to lead the perspective into the perspective of the writer or producer.
