Keywords: picture series, students’ writing ability, procedure texts The study was designed to improve the students’ ability by implementing the picture series in writing procedure texts. This study was a Classroom Action Research, which consisted of two cycles, each of which consisted of four steps, namely: planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting on the observation. The subjects of this study were 32 students of class 7A at SMP Lab, State University of Malang, in the academic year of 2010/2011. The instrument used to collect the data were field notes, the observation guide, questionnaire, interview guide and the students’ writings. The data were analyzed qualitatively and reported descriptively. The criterion of success was 80% of the students passed the minimum passing standard of 65 The results of this study showed that the picture series improved the students’ writing ability. In preliminary study, there was 31% could pass the minimum passing standard of 65, in cycle I it improved and became 71% and in the cycle II 81% of the students could pass the minimum passing standard of 65. In conclusion, the use of picture series helped more than 80% of the students to achieve the minimum passing standard of 65 in terms of the product. In terms of the process it can be seen from the students’ positive attitude. Thus, the criterion of succes was achieved The students’ writing showed that they were able to express the ideas, arrange the procedure texts in a good order, and write the procedure texts in acceptable organization, content and language (vocabulary and grammar). The use of picture series also gave positive change in the students’ attitude during the teaching and learning process There were steps in the implementing picture series. (1) introducing the picture series, (2) explaining about picture series, (3) explaining about the generic stucture and the langauge features of the procedure texts, (4) giving the example of a procedure text with picture series and asking students to identify the generic structure and the language features, (5) asking the students to write a draft of a procedure text based on the picture series given. (6) asking them to edit and publish their writing in front of the class Based on the result of this study, it is suggested that English teacher use picture series in teaching writing as alternative media in order to improve the students’ ability in writing.
