This thesis analyzes the aspect of the development of schizophrenia on the main character from the short story of "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner 1930. The writer uses psychoanalysis approach in analyzing the main character named Miss Emily. This research is conducted by using qualitative descriptive method, which is a study that explains about the development of schizophrenia on Miss Emily. Some theories are used to support this research which are positive symptoms of schizophrenia, negative symptoms of schizophrenia, DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder- fifth edition) and defense mechanism. The result of this study reveals that the development of schizophrenia influences Miss Emily’s character. The schizophrenia symptoms that Miss Emily suffered in the earlier stage include delusion, social withdrawal and lacks of insight. Schizophrenia symptoms that exist on Miss Emily in the development stage consist of persistence delusion, social withdrawal, avolition and alogia. Schizophrenia symptoms which appear on Miss Emily in the final stage consist of avolition and lacks of insight. Miss Emily employs some defense mechanism to overcome her anxiety due to schizophrenia. Thus, Miss Emily dies as she surrenders with schizophrenia disease. It then can be concluded that the development of schizophrenia influences Miss Emily’s character.
