  • Based on the preliminary study, it shows that the teaching of writing in MTsN Godean does not ease the students to write skilfully in writing. The students' writings have mistakes. Therefore, the researcher extremely requires overcoming the problem by applying Open-ended Questioning Technique in teaching writing. This technique is a combination of writing process consisting of prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing and the genre, particularly a recount, which allows the students to relate between the purpose and the form. The research problem is how can open-ended question technique improve the students' recount text writing ability? On the basis of the research problem, the spotlight of this research is on the use of open-ended questioning to improve recount text writing ability of the eight grade students of MTsN Godean. The design employed in this research is Classroom Action Research. In this research, the researcher is also assisted by a colleague. The research is carried out in a single class which consists of forty one students who are taken as the subjects of the research. The research procedure is planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher employs some instruments such as observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire, and portfolio or students' writings. The procedure of applying open-ended questioning technique starts from asking the students about their last activities as pre writing. Based on the students' answer, then, the teacher designed a prompt considering that it must be interesting, covering all the students' experience, and at their language level. After that, the students in groups formulate the prompt to be orientation. Having finished writing orientation, to make complete draft the teacher gives them open-ended question to expand their recount. To revise their recount the teacher asks them to add necessary information and delete unrelated information. To close their revising draft, the teacher launches reorientation as an option by asking what their impression on the activities they write in their recount. Finally, the teacher asks them to edit their writing. The finding of the research shows that the use of open-ended questioning technique improves the students' writing ability. The increase of the average score of the students' writing can be seen from each cycle. Before the technique is applied, the students' writing average score is 45.585. After the technique is applied in the first cycle, the students' writing average score is 57.87. And the students' writing average score in the second is 76.121. Based on the result of the implementation of open-ended questioning technique for teaching writing, it is suggested that English teachers apply the technique, mainly to teach writing a recount text. Moreover, for the future researchers, especially those who are interested in applying open-ended questioning technique, it is suggested that they apply this technique for writing of other text types such as descriptive, narrative, procedure, and report.
