- This research study was conducted based on the problem faced by the researcher as an English teacher at MTs Negeri Planjan Kesugihan Cilacap. Based on the result of the preliminary at eighth grader of VIII E, it was found that the students' writing ability especially in narrative text was still unsatisfactory and the students had low motivation. To solve the problem films technique was chosen. This technique was selected because it was able to stimulate the students to be more actively involved in the writing activity so that their writing ability enhanced. The research problem was formulated as follows: "How can films improve the ability of the eight graders of MTs Negeri Planjan Kesugihan Cilacap in writing narrative paragraphs?" This study employed collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in designing the lesson plan, implementing the action, observing the action, and making reflection. The subjects of this study were VIII E students of MTs Negeri Planjan Kesugihan Cilacap of the 2008-2009 academic year. This study was conducted in two cycles by the following procedures of the action research i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The suitable procedures of implementing films in teaching narrative writing were (1) giving the students an ice-breaking session, (2) grouping the students by asking them to match the meaning (Indonesian-English) of the keywords they got, (3) asking the students to sit in group of four to five, (4) asking the students to pronounce the keywords after the teacher, (5) displaying pictures related to the topic, (6) providing the students a model of narrative, (7) displaying a film slowly and even freezing in some incidents and asking the students to fill the design of narrative chart in groups, (8) asking the students to answer series of questions in groups, (9) asking and guiding the students to develop their draft based on a series of questions in to a short paragraph independently, (10) asking the students to revise and edit their drafts, (11) giving the students opportunity to publish their writing. The findings of the study show that the strategy can improve the students' ability in writing narrative paragraphs. The improvement can be seen on the mean score of the students writing from Cycle 1 and 2. In Cycle 1, the students' mean score on writing test was only 61 whereas, in Cycle 2, the mean score was 72. Besides, films techniques can increase the students' involvement and motivation during the writing tasks. It can be seen from the percentages of the students' involvement, in cycle 1 the students involvement was 63% and 70% in Cycle 2. Dealing with the students' responses there were 86% students stated that they were motivated in Cycle 1 and 87% in cycle2. Based on the positive findings of the implementation of films to teach writing it is suggested to English teacher to employ films media in their writing class. For the school, it is recommended to provide the media such as a set computer and LCD projector. To the future researchers, it is suggested that they conduct classroom action research on the use of films in teaching learning process related to other skills (speaking, listening) and text types (descriptive, procedure or recount).
