  • Based on the result of preliminary study, it was found that the listening achievement of the second-year students at MTsN Model Amuntai was still unsatisfactory. Students had difficulty in terms of comprehending and finding detailed information from the text they listened. Those problems are caused by some factors. First, the teachers lack creativity to use available listening material. Second, the teachers lack varieties in teaching listening. The study is designed to improve the students' listening skill through the use of the storytelling technique. The objective of the study is to find out how the storytelling technique can be used to improve the students' listening skill in terms of comprehending the story and finding detailed information in the story. Employing an action research design which is based on the classroom, the researcher was assisted by the English teacher in observing the teaching and learning process. This study was conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this study were students of class VIIIF of MTsN Model Amuntai. The instruments were the listening tests, observation checklists and questionnaires. The criteria of success were determined on the basis of students' improvement on the listening achievement and their interest in the activities during the implementation of the storytelling technique. The criteria of success were achieved when 75% of the students could get the score of more than 6. Besides, the success was also determined on the basis of students' interest in the activity. The technique is considered successful when 75% of the students have a positive response on the implementation of storytelling technique. With the implementation of the technique, the criteria of success were successfully achieved in Cycle 2. There were 81% of the total number of the students who could get the scores of more than 6 and 80% have positive responses on the implementation of storytelling. The findings showed that the effective procedure of the storytelling technique was (1) showing a large picture (20x25 cm) to the students, (2) asking about the picture, (3) giving the students guided vocabulary related to the story, (4) practicing the pronunciation of the vocabulary, (5) asking the students to check their understanding about the story, (6) telling the story twice to make the it truly comprehensible to the students, and (7) asking the students about their opinion and feeling toward the story. It can be concluded that the storytelling technique has been proven to be able to improve the students' listening ability in the terms of comprehending the story and finding detailed information in the story. English teachers are recommended to apply the storytelling technique in their teaching to improve students' listening ability. Other researchers are suggested to conduct research by implementing the storytelling technique in other language skills. Material developers are recommended to develop materials by using stories for MTs students by considering the students' specific characteristics. Finally, the school principal is suggested to provide facilities, in this case various kinds of English stories and local stories books in the library and to conduct events related with the use of stories such as storytelling competition to improve the students' interest in stories written in English and also in the English language itself.
