  • Background: Caffeine has ergogenic effect that can increase exercise performance by using lipid energy storage that is responsible to the effectiveness of glycogen metabolism of muscle so can prevent tiredness. Aim: Purpose of this study was to see the effect of caffeine on endurance duration of student from Airlangga Medical University. Method: Forty healthy male students from Airlangga Medical University were randomized and divided in control group (n = 20) and experimental group (n = 20). They were given placebo (empty capsule) or caffeine capsule (3 mg/kg body weight). Graded exercise test used ergo cycle with increased load 1⁄2 kp every 6 minutes until subjects reach 80% submaximal heart rate. Heart rate recovery is measured in the first, third and fifth minute. The tiredness between the groups is measured in a subjective value with a scale range from 1-10. Variabels were compared by using paired t test. Result: No significant duration (p > 0.05). No significant heart rate recovery in the first and third minute (p > 0.05) but significant in the fifth minute (p < 0.05). Significant tiredness (p < 0.05). Analysis: Effect caffeine to the heart rate affect the duration of exercise. Conclusion: No significant difference in the student’s duration of endurance.
