- Meloxicam is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), it has definite activity in treating osteoarthritis, but gastrointestinal adverse reactions were the most frequently reported when it use in long term with high dose. The physicochemical properties (log p = 1.9, MW = 351.4 Da) make meloxicam suitable for the transdermal drug delivery system. The aim of this research study was to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of matrix type transdermal patch containing meloxicam that prepared using different ratio of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymeric combination carboxymethyl chitosan, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose E15 and ethyl cellulose N22 using ratio (F1) 4 : 5.5 : 5.5, (F2) 5 : 4.5 : 4.5, (F3) 6 : 3.5 : 3.5. Patch meloxicam was evaluated for physical characteristics (Organoleptic, % moisture content, drug content, homogeneity, and surface morphology). Carrageenan-induced paw edema was a method to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of three formulations patch meloxicam with parameter AUC edema (%.hour). The result showed there were no significant differences in the antiinflamatory effect of all the formulas. F3 has the best anti-inflammatory effect, because that shows the significant difference with the controls (F3 placebo), F3 contains the highest concentration of carboxymethyl chitosan with the highest total concentration of hydrophilic polymer.
