- Background: Recent studies have demonstrated the role of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs CRP) in inflammatory diseases; however, it is unclear whether this molecule has a role after severe head injury (SHI). Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the levels of hs CRP in both cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum from patients after SHI. The study focused on fourteen patients with SHI which divided into group GCS 4-6 and GCS 7-8, and evaluate the correlation with level of consciousness (GCS) in a first and third day period following the head trauma. The values were compared with those from seven serum control patients, who had mild head injury (GCS 15) and seven CSF control patients of Benign Prostate Hypertrophy and delivery who had subarachnoid block anesthesia. Results: In the CSF and serum of the patients after SHI, hs CRP was found to be significantly higher, than in the controls and correlated significantly with level of consciousness (GCS) at all time periods. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that hs CRP reaches high levels in both CSF and serum in patients with SHI, and demonstrates for the first time that levels of hs CRP were correlated with group of SHI (GCS 4-6 and GCS 7-8) and level of consciousness (GCS) on first and third day examinations. It may therefore hs CRP can be used as an inflammatory index and predicting factor of outcome of SHI. This finding suggests a need for further studies in this area, which are alrger in scope than the present study.
