  • Mount Kelud, which is located on the border of Kediri and Blitar, East Java, erupted on Thursday, February 13, 2014. The impact of the eruption of Mount Kelud felt until the cities in Central Java, East Java and Madura. Thus, Sidodadi village which is located approximately 10 kilometers from Mount Kelud was also affected by the eruption of the volcano. The area is one of the disaster-prone areas, and people lived in this are is known as the "Forest Village Community". They live as farmers who work on land owned by Perhutani (Indonesian Forest Enterprises). The eruption of Mount Kelud caused an increase in temperature, volcanic ash and gravel. The eruption also brought damage to the environment, ash-covered village roads, roof of houses were damaged because the weight of ash that covered the roof tiles couldn’t be handled. Water sources were also damaged and so were other facilities. When a volcano erupted, the villagers live in these areas evacuated to safe places for approximately 10 days. Upon returning from refugee camps, the villagers need the new adaptation strategy to survive in the region. Although the government and some parties have provided assistance, there are still issues to be resolved in order to continue living back in their village. Therefore in this paper will describe "How the villagers plan the post-disaster eruption of Mount Kelud adaptation strategy to resume their life in the village?” To answer the question, this study is carried out with qualitative research method in May-June 2014. Adaptation strategy of the villagers include a) to conduct mutual cooperation to improve infrastructure (rural roads, water resources, and others); b) to ask the help of the villagers, Perhutani for house re-building and renovation; b) to save the daily needs, and c) to use the food resources in the forest. Keywords: adaptation strategy, eruption of volcano, small-farmer, disaster-prone areas.
