- Background: The development of cell-based tissue engineering and cell transfer technology enables the incorporation of stem cells in scaffold that can help achieve periodontal tissue regeneration. Bovine amnion membrane (BAM) is an alternative to the human placental amnion membrane as a scaffold for adipose tissue stem cells. However, there has not been much research on the physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics of the Freeze-Dried Human Amnion Membrane (FDHAM) and Freeze-Dried Bovine Amnion Membrane (FDBAM). Objective: Analyze the characteristics of FDHAM and FDBAM. Method: Experimental laboratory study to examine the physical characteristics of membrane thickness (by screw micrometer) and membrane porosity (SEM observation), chemical characteristics through elemental content (EDX observation) and functional group spectrophotometry (FTIR observation), mechanical characteristics through swelling ratio, water content percentage and degradation rate. Results: FDBAM was thicker than FDHAM (p<0.05), but did not have differences in porosity size, elemental content, functional group spectrophotometry, swelling ratio, percentage of water content and degradation rate (P>0.05). Conclusion: FDBAM has the same physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics as FDHAM.
