  • Transdermal drug delivery is a controlled release of drugs through the skin to obtain therapeutic effect locally or systemically. One of the dosage form of transdermal preparation is patch. Meloxicam, which formulated as transdermal patch, have a lot of potential advantages to avoid first pass metabolism, maintain constant therapeutic levels as local site, minimize side effect and avoid gastrointestinal adverse effect due to local contact with mucosa by oral administration so is can improve compliance. This research has been investigated the effect of concentration of HPMC 606 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% on the characteristics and inflammatory effect of meloxicam transdermal patch. Meloxicam NLC system with lipid ratio 80 : 20 (monostearin and alpha tocopheryl acetate) were used as drug reservoir and hydroxypropil methylcellulose 606 (HPMC 606) as rate controlling membrane. NLC meloxicam as drug reservoir were prepared using high shear homogenization method. The transdermal patch were evaluated for thickness, weight variation, moisture content, uniformity content and homogeneity. All independent variables had significant effect on the dependent variables (p-values < 0.05) using one way ANOVA, except the weight uniformity content and homogeneity. The rat paw edema test was performed to evaluate the anti-inflamatory activity of patch meloxicam, F1 with lowest levels of HPMC 606 (5%) had provide most effective anti-inflammatory effect.
