- The aim of this study was to examine the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extracts of Callyspongia sp., Niphates olemda, Coelocarteria agglomerans, Stylissa carteri and Cinachyrella sp. collected which come from Tabuhan Island, Banyuwangi, East Java. The antibacterial activity was undertaken by using microdilution method against Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. A coloring reagent p-iodonitrotetrazolium chloride (INT) was added to the solution to indicate the present of living bacteria. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was determined as the lowest concentration of samples with no apparant growth of bacteria indicated by no visual changes in INT colour. The results showed that the methanolic extract of Callyspongia sp. inhibited the growth of E.coli at 500 ppm and S. aureus at 250 ppm. However, there were no antibacterial activities observed for Niphates olemda, Coelocarteria agglomerans, Stylissa carteri and Cinachyrella sp.
