- Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus in mother is an important risk factor for the development fetal macrosomia. Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as glucose intolerance of variable degree with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Macrosomia in newborn is classified as newborn with the birthweight of ≥4000g. Purpose: To find a correlation between uncontrolled and controlled glucose level in lean gestational and pregestational diabetes mellitus patients that results in birth of newborns with macrosomia in Dr Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya. Method: This research was a retroprospective analytic study with a cross sectional design by using medical records at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya from January 2016 to December 2017.The results were analysed using SPSS software to find the correlation between variables. P-value<0.05 is considered statistically significant. Results: The chi-square measure of association showed that the controlled and uncontrolled fasting glucose level, 2-hour postprandial glucose level and glucose level at the time of birth of mother were not significantly associated with macrosomia condition in newborns (X2 =1.384, p=0.508; X2= 0.57, p= 1.000; X2=0.002, p=1.000). Conclusion: The results showed that there was no relationship between macrosomia with glucose level of lean gestational and pregestational diabetes mellitus. More research is needed to find the correlation between macrosomia and other risk factors in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya. Therapeutic approach such as physical exercise should be implemented to reduce effects of uncontrolled glucose level.
