- Premature infants are at high risk of complications, one of them is Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). RDS is associated with pulmonary surfactant deficiency. Dexamethasone is recommended for prevention of RDS. The purpose of this study was to describe the utilization of dexamethasone as a fetal lung maturation therapy at the Maternal-Perinatal Unit of Universitas Airlangga Hospital. This study was conducted in the period of January 2016 to April 2018 in a descriptive-observational study and used retrospective data. The inclusion criteria in this study were as follows: (1) Pregnant patients with 24-36 weeks of gestational age receiving dexamethasone as fetal lung maturation therapy and (2) pregnant patients undergoing inpatient treatment and termination of pregnancy. Incomplete patient data were excluded from the study. The results showed that all of the patient were given 6 mg dexamethasone intramuscularly. Only 23% of all patients received therapy four times for 48 hours. The outcomes of dexamethasone therapy generated in this study were as follows: As many as 38% of infants were diagnosed with RDS, the need for respiratory support nasal (40%), CPAP (60%) and no infant using a ventillator. All premature infants (100%) left the hospital alive. It was concluded that the use of dexamethasone therapy in term of the dose, route and frequency of administration according to guideline. The dexamethasone therapy results RDS incidence and ventilator requirements are fewer in premature infants.
