  • Teaching vocabulary through games for elementary school children has some enjoyment and problems. Some problems such as the reasons why some students feel difficult to memorize vocabulary, what the students need to do if they cannot remember vocabulary well, and provide some possible activities to make students remember vocabulary well. In this matter, the solution was the writer tried to find the cause of the problems. First, the writer sat in during the learning process before she taught the students. She paid attention to the class’ atmosphere when the teacher taught. She also approached the students personally by asking and paying attention to their gestures. Through these ways, the writer could find a reason why some students felt difficult to memorize vocabulary. This was caused by some reasons such as they did not accustom to speak in English during the lesson, they did not participate much during the lesson because of their low motivation, and they did not use the vocabulary that they had already learnt in their lesson’s activity. She also knew what students need to do if they could not remember vocabulary well. Students usually showed different mimics and characteristics when they could not remember vocabulary well. They usually showed their confuse face and remained silent. The writer found some possible activities to make students remember vocabulary well. When the writer sat in during the learning process, she found that students need some enjoyable activity such as games. Therefore, she decided to use game because she saw some students did not participate much during the learning process, and she tried to change the class atmosphere and taught the class by using games. The used of game here was to arouse students motivation. In this case, the writer made oral and written game. She made a game based on cooperative learning for oral and game and word search game for the written one. Those games could boost students’ motivation and improve their memorizing skill step by step. Especially for the word search game, they were very interested because they never did that kind of game before. Based on these considerations, the writer thought that students also need some refreshing activities during the learning process.
