  • Belief in medicine was a determinant of medication adherence in diabetes mellitus patients. Negative medication belief can influence adherence to long term medication. This study aimed to see the association between belief in medicine and medication adherence with diabetes mellitus patients at primary health care centers in Surabaya. This study was designed as a cross-sectional study using accidental sampling. Belief was measured using Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ) and adherence was measured using Adherence to Refills and Medications Scale (ARMS). About 100 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were recruited on February-May 2018 at primary health care centers in Surabaya. The result shows that there were associations between subscale of BMQ-General Overuse, BMQ-General Harm, BMQ-Specific Concerns and medication adherence with p value 0.002, 0.034, 0.011 and r value 0.310, 0.212, 0.252. In conclusion, weak belief in overuse, harm, and concerns is associated with high adherence. The assessment of belief in medicine is important to improve adherence of diabetes mellitus patients.
