- The discussion of gender in this millennium era has transformed into another level. The fluidity of gender attracts the topic of this study. This paper examines how gender is being performed by male makeup artist, @mac_daddyy in Instagram account. Regarding to its profession, makeup artist is known as woman-ish activity that result flawless appearance. Since the doer is a male, this pulls the researcher’s interest to analyze how gender is being performed by Angel Merino or globallyknown as @mac_daddyy on Instagram, who has a unique way to display himself as a person. Interestingly, the existence of beard on his face with full makeup and a feminine behavior and girly outfits are categorized as cross-dressing, one of Judith Butler’s notions in gender performativity. Two of the concepts in Butler’s gender performativity such as repetition and revelation would be more deliberately dissected in this study to seek how @mac_daddyy performs his gender. Drawing on the work of Judith Butler and helped by the semiotic study by Roland Barthes as the analysis method, the researcher’s reading on @mac_daddyy emphasizes that he is performing his gender as a male makeup artist in a hybrid way due to its combination of masculine and feminine senses of appearance.
