  • News is a daily or weekly published information that talks about important or recent events in specific form. Online newspapers are usually formed by its printed version but it cannot be a strict translation of the print. But, it is selected and re-formatted from the print edition. News writer is challenged to write a news story in limited length but it have to maintain the unify of text. The writer is required to produce cohesive writing in order to improve readability of text. The writer has to consider cohesion especially the lexical because it connects the words and sentences in a text. This study aims to analyze how news writer use lexical cohesion in online news. The objective of the study is to identify the types of lexical as cohesive devices with their occurences in Tempo English online news stories. The study also attempts to analyze the most dominant lexical cohesive types occur in news text. In analyzing the data, the study used model of lexical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) The data were twenty four articles of political issue published on early year of 2018. This study reveals several main findings. First, all types of lexical as cohesive devices occur in news stories online. Repetition is more dominant than other lexical devices to achieve coherence in news stories with 61% occurences. While, meronym is the most rarely used in writing political online news stories with 2% occurences.
