- A speech is one of the way to reveal the mind in the form of words devoted to the crowd. One kind of speech is a political speech. Political speech is a process of individual or group communication activities conducted in institutional and aims to create a certain effect or impact. This study aims to analyze the illocutionary acts of Michelle Obama's speech during the 2016 presidential election process to support Hillary Clinton in the campaign. The objective of this study is to find the types of illocutionary act and find the felicity conditions in Michelle Obama's speech. The writer used Youtube to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of illocutionary acts introduced by Searle in 1976. The results of this study found 5 types of illocutionary acts and felicity conditions in Michelle Obama's speech. Assertive is the dominant type of illocutionary acts in Michelle Obama's speech with 49% and followed by 36% directive, 7.5% expressive, 3.5% declarative, and 3% commisive. Since assertive is a speech act related to the speaker's belief in her statement, Michelle Obama provides data and assurances to strengthen her argument. Therefore, by saying assertive, Michelle Obama can influence people to believe in her statement and to provide support for Hillary Clinton as the next president.
