- for children should be a priority problems and need to be followed up immediately. This study aimed to examine phenomenon of drug abuse in children based on social support and social network. Research was an observational study with qualitative research type. The study was conducted from March to May 2018 in Putat Jaya, Surabaya city. The data were collected through in-depth interviews to the 22 children (ages 10-17) in three criteria (low risk criteria, high risk and drug abuse) and parents of each children. FGDs were conducted on the member of PJBN coalition, PKK group and the Karang Taruna group. Some social network functions were related in preventing drug abuse and could make children as drug abusers. These functions include companionship, social control, social influence, social undermining and social support. The role of these functions could directly prevent drugs and has a role through coping resources in children and families to drug prevention. Community resources could be identified based on organized elements within the PJBN coalition which was a community empowerment product aimed to prevent drug abuse in children. It refers to human resources, network and their activity or method to drug prevention. Lack of support and control of parents and community of children and child affiliation of friends who are at risk of becoming drug abusers makes barriers in the prevention of drug abuse behavior in children. Families and communities need to develop support and control functions for children to prevent drug abuse. Children need to try to establish assertive relationships with pro-social groups in the community that ultimately children activities will not end up in act ivities at risk of drug abuse.
