- This study aims to discuss about the main character, Jude, in I’ll Give You The Sun. This study analyzes how mother loss affects Jude’s character or personality and her relationship with her twin brother, Noah. Sublimation is the defense mechanism unconsciously used by Jude, the main character, related with her trauma. Psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud will be used as the main theory, especially about defense mechanism, to analyze the core issue and anxiety. This study is a library descriptive research where the data are being taken from the novel by Jandy Nelson entitled I’ll Give You The Sun. Journals, and research which are compatible to the analysis are used as reference to support the analysis of the issue that was read by using pyschoanalytical approach. This study finds that Jude’s defense mechanism is associated with her traumas which are the death of her grandmother, the death of her mother, and the separation of her parents. All the traumatic incidents in her life lead to anxiety and to get over the anxiety she does one of a kind of defense mechanism, which is sublimation. This sublimation is the way she can deal with her traumatize and guilty feeling
