  • Objective: to examine the effect of triamcinolone acetonide injection to the amount of macrophage after trabeculectomy procedure Method: This study is a true experimental study conducted on the eyes of new zealand white rabbit. Trabeculectomy was performed on 22 rabbits eyes with 11 eyes received Triamcinolone Acetonide (TCA) and 11 eyes as control group received Balanced Saline Solution (BSS). TCA and BSS are injected into the bleb following trabeculectomy. On the 7th day, samples were terminated followed by the enucleation of the eye and the bleb area underwent histology examination process. Immunohistochemical histologic examination using CD68 was performed to calculate the number of macrophages after a trabeculectomy surgery procedure was performed. Result: At the end of the study there was a difference on the number of macrophages in which the number of macrophages in the treatment group was fewer in number than the control group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significants (p=0.009). Conclusion: TCA injection (treatment group) performed on bleb after trabeculectomy surgery in this study showed a decrease number of macrophages compared to the control group, from which TCA injection can be used as a therapeutic option to prevent posttrabeculectomy subconjunctival fibrosis.
