- Background: Removable orthodontic appliances are made in a laboratory by a dental technician. The main material is acrylic and cold cured acrylic is commonly used. Acrylic work without adequate protection could result in negative impacts on the health of dental technicians. Purpose: To describe several hazards that can be aff ected dental technician when fabricating removable orthodontic appliances. Reviews: In the process of orthodontic acrylic plate fabrication, dental technicians will be exposed to dust and acrylic monomers. Finishing and polishing of acrylic also used materials either pumice or whiting that containing silica. Some risk reported are pneumoconiosis, irritation, allergies, and silicosis. Cross infection were also easily occured. Adequate equipment and action were required to minimize the risk so it will not endanger the health of dental technicians. Conclusion: In orthodontic removable appliances fabrication, dental technicians are facing the risk to possible irritation, allergies, respiratory problems and cross-infection that is harmful to their health. Dental laboratories need to be equipped with a dust extractor, a good ventilation system and technicians should wear work protecting device and perform adequate disinfection.
