- Andrographolide was a major component from Andrographis paniculata which had a wide potency as a medicine. However, Andrographolide has limited behavior such as low bioavailability and instability in acidic or alkaline extreme condition of gastrointestinal tract. Microparticle with combination of chitosan and alginate as it’s matrix had been studied to overcome these problem. The objective of this research was studying the effect of alginate concentration on physical characteristics and encapsulation efficiency of andrographolide-chitosan-alginate microparticles. The result showed that increasing alginate concentration will form non spherical particles with a rough surfaces. FTIR spectrum and DTA thermogram indicated polyelectrolyte complex between chitosan and alginate, also ionic bond between chitosan and TPP had formed. XRD diffractogram showed changes of andrographolide crystallinity. The entrapment efficiency of microparticle was increased at 0,5% alginate concentration. Further research about alginate concentration and aerosolization instrument needed for improving microparticle characteristics.
