  • The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of polymer on the physical characteristics BSA – loaded alginate microspheres. Microspheres prepared using ionotropic gelation with aerosolization technique. The concentration of sodium alginate as a matrix polymer was 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 1,5M CaCl2 was used as crosslinker. Microspheres were characterized for particle size, morphology, moisture content and yield value. Interaction between polymer and CaCl2 in microspheres was characterized by FT-IR and thermal analysis using DTA. As results, on the FT-IR spectra interaction confirmed by the shift of carbonyl group and the loss of guluronic wave number in the fingerprint area. In DTA thermogram shown a shift of melting point between the physical mixture and the formula at the temperature 190oC to 172 – 179oC. Spherical microspheres were shown with everage sizes from 2.20 – 2.84 μm, yield value was between 79.24 – 92.88% and moisture content was between 2.20 – 5.00% . Increase alginate concentration 0.5% in each formulas resulted an increase of particle size, moisture content and yield value.
