- Introduction: Minimizing the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly can be done by developing the activity of thinking. One of them to read a short story and retell a story which has been read. Research aims to improve or slow the decline in cognitive function of elderly. Method: Type of research was pre-experimental with one group pre-post test design. Sample size 14 respondents who meet a demand the inclusion and exclusion criteria, taken using purposive sampling technique. The research took a place at UPTD Griya Werdha Surabaya in June 9- 21, 2016. The independent variable was a reading short story and retelling the story, the dependent variable was the cognitive function. Data were collected using MMSE questionnaires and analyzed using Wilcoxon (α<0,005). Results: The result was indicate a therapeutic effect of reading short story activities and retelling the story of the increase in the elderly with cognitive function (p=0.001). Discussion: Reading short story and retelling the story activities can be used as an intervention to improve the cognitive function of elderly.
