  • Background: Malassezia folliculitis (MF) is a fungal acneiform condition commonly misdiagnosed as acne vulgaris. Malassezia folliculitis results from overgrowth of yeast present in the normal cutaneous flora. Eruptions may be associated with conditions altering this flora, such as immunosuppression and antibiotic use. The most common presentation is monomorphic papules and pustules, often on the chest, back, posterior arms, and face. Purpose: The folliculitis patients were examined, and 2 scraping smears. The first smear was stained with May Grunwald Giemsa(MGG), and the other was stained with Potassium hydroxide(KOH). Method: This is an analytic observational cross sectional research of MF patient in Dermato-Venereology outpatient clinic of Dr. Soetomo hospital Surabaya. Subject collected through consecutive sampling since March-May 2016 with sample size 52 patient with MF, then data were analysized analytically. Results: There is no significant different between KOH examination and MGG examination [p=0,063(>0,05)] Conclusions: There is 7 patient negative(13,5%) with KOH examination but with MGG examination become 2 patient negative(3,8%) and 5 patient were positive (9,6%). Although positivity MGG higher than KOH but not significantly different.
