  • Ciprofloxacin is a wide-spectrum antibiotic which has a good ability to penetrate in the bone tissue. It could be used as a therapy for osteomyelitis (bone infection). The bacteria which exist in the bone tissue with osteomyelitis could form a biofilm that could resist transfer of ciprofloxacin. Controlled release drug delivery system through an implant resulted local and controlled release of antibiotic in a long time period according to the amount needed for osteomyelitis condition. The combination of ciprofloxacin-Bovine Hydroxyapatite (BHA)-chitosan (10:30:60) with cross-linker genipin 0.3% (formula I) and 0.5% (formula II) from the previous research give a controlled release of ciprofloxacin from implant on it therapeutic windows. The aim of this study to determine influence of cross-linker genipin concentration 0.3% (formula I) and 0.5% (formula II) towards the activity of ciprofloxacin in the bone implant to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Agar diffusion was used as the method. Resistance zona was used to calculate the potency of ciprofloxacin antibiotic. The result showed that there was no significant difference of ciprofloxacin antibiotic activity on the bone implant from both formula and met the requirement antibiotic potency in Farmakope Indonesia IV (80-125%) by the potency value 110.34% (formula I) and 109.87% (formula II).
