- Staphylococcus aureus are a main causes of bone infection. 58% of bone infection in the world is caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Ciprofloxacin is as broad spectrum antibiotic used for bone infection and has good bone tissue penetration. To increase therapeutic effect of ciprofloxacin, local drug delivery system (implant) was suggested. The combination of ciprofloxacin - Bovine Hydroxyapatite (BHA) - chitosan (10 : 30 : 60) with cross-linker glutaraldehid 0.3% (formula 1) and 0.5% (formula 2) from the previous research give a controlled release of ciprofloxacin from implant on it therapeutic window (2-50 μg/mL). The aim of this study to determine the influence of glutaraldehid concentration towards the activity of ciprofloxacin in implant to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. In this study, antibiotic microbial assay was done using diffusion method. Sample test was ciprofloxacin solutions that was aquired from drug release test in 29 days. Diameter of inhibition zone to be potency (%). Potency analyzed using t – test on α = 0.05. The result showed that there was no significant difference of ciprofloxacin activity from both formula by the potency value 109.34% (formula 1) and 108.89% (formula 2). Potency ciprofloxacin in these two formulas is meet the requirement antibiotic potency in Farmakope Indonesia IV (80-125%).
