  • Basil leaves (ocimum basilicum) produce essential oil, called with basil oil. The decoction of basil leaves can be considered as antiseptic, while alginate is widely used as a molding material in rehabilitation units in dentistry, such as prosthodontics, orthodontia, and dental restorations. Many oral infectious microorganisms or bacteria are likely to participate in the alginate mold. The objective of the Research: This research is aimed to know the effects of the decoction of basil leaves as antiseptic and the materials of alginate mold on the growth of oral microorganisms. Method of the Research: This research can be considered as an experimental laboratory research. The population of this research involved six students of Dentistry Faculty, Universitas Airlangga aged 17-25 years old. In this research, the number of oral microorganism colonies in blood medium (blood agar) was measured. First, the sample was taken from the alginate molding of the left maxillary first molar by using a partially printed spoon. Next, it was cut with sterile aluminum ring with the diameter of 1 cm at the posterior region, and then cut into three sections with a sterile scalpel to be soaked in sterile distilled water and then in boiling water of basil leaves for 1 and 3 minutes. Afterwards, the results were tabulated and analyzed by ANOVA with a significance level of 5 %, and if there is a difference, it will be analyzed with HSD statistical test. Results: Based on the results of Anova test, it is known that there was no significant difference though the growth of microorganism was decreased. Moreover, based on the mean values obtained from Tuckey HSD test, a multiple comparison test, it is also known that there was no significant difference. Conclusion: It may be concluded that the soaking of alginate mold in the decoction of basil leaves , there was no significant difference between that obtained from the one minute soaking process and that obtained from the three minute soaking one.
