  • Traditional gender roles commonly portray men as a strong creature while women as the weak one. The representation of men and women is also represented in the media such as movies. Mostly movie tells that the main character is a male figure who shows his masculinity and toughness. On the other hand, a female figure is only to be a supporting figure compared to the male character. However, in 2014, there is the opposite type of movie that dares to show female character in different way. Lucy is a famous scienceaction movie directed by Luc Besson in 2014. This movie shows the ability of a female character to exhibit the other female traits. This movie seems to challenge the binary opposition between male and female, especially the characterization in the movie. By using Louis Giannetti’s narrative nonnarrative as the methodology to analyze this movie, it gained 12 scenes to be analyzed. The New Images of Tough Women by Sherri A. Inness and Gender, Sexuality, and Toughness by Jeffrey Brown as the theories, it is found that the feminist movement is not successful in this movie because this movie still portrays female as a weak creature that even in modern movies, women are still portrayed as someone who are dependent on men.
