  • Recently, politics has become an interesting topic to be discussed. In the late of 2015, there was a case about code of ethics violation by the head of Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (DPR) Republik Indonesia, Setya Novanto, because of his misrepresentation about President Jokowi in the meeting with Freeport party, Maroef Sjamsoeddin and Muhammad Riza Chalid. This study aims to explore the pragmatic aspects of their conversation based on the framework of Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory with qualitative approach. The data of this study is Papa Minta Saham conversation that retrieved from official Mata Najwa Youtube chanel and transcribed orthographically. Among the strategy used were Bald On Record strategy, Positive Politeness strategy, Negative Politeness strategy, and Off Record strategy. The data of this study consists of 93 utterances from Setya Novanto and 138 utterances from Muhammad Riza Chalid which were analyzed based on the frequency of Politeness Strategy. The findings show that the Politeness Strategy that most intense performed by the participants is Positive Politeness and it was intended to lessen the rank of imposition during the meeting. It can also be seen from the result that the Positive Politeness is often used by Muhammad Riza Chalid as the instrument in negotiating with Maroef Sjamsuddin.
