- Background: Acrylic resin is the most common material for fabricating removable dentures. It possesses fine properties in many aspects, but it also has weaknesses regarding the ideal criteria for a perfect removable denture especially the transverse strength. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (UHMWPE) has some properties that are suggested for enhancing the transverse strength of acrylic resin. Purpose: The aim for this study was to assemble the data in relation to the transverse strength of acrylic resin enhanced with UHMWPE. Method: This study was a laboratory experiment involving 32 pieces of samples and the samples were divided into four different groups equally. UHMWPE then was added in several concentrations, i.e. 0 wt% (control), 3 wt%, 6 wt% and 9 w t%. The dimension for all samples were 60mm x 10mm x 3.3mm according to ISO 1567:1999 standard. Results: There were significant difference between the control group and treatment groups (p<0.05). The highest result was the 6-wt% group (x=120.3150) and the lowest result was the 9-wt% group (x=99,8975). There was no significant difference between control group and the 3 -wt% group. Conclusion: The increasing concentration of fiber does not always mean enhancing the transverse strength of acrylic resin, thus a peak concentration is apparent.
